Carpet Lice Bites

While carpet beetles don t bite or feed on humans their larvae can irritate the skin.

Bed bugs actually create red itchy welts on the skin from biting you while the carpet beetle doesn t bite at all but causes a similar red itchy welt due to an allergic reaction from the prickly little hairs on the carpet beetle larvae pictured center. Lice are parasites that live on the skin. Bedbugs are larger than dust mites and can be seen with the naked eye.

Carpet mites more commonly referred to as dust mites or straw itch mites are tiny microscopic bugs that dwell within your carpet clothing bedding and anywhere else they find refuge. They re sometimes confused with dust mites because they live in bedding carpets and curtains. There are two kinds of lice. Most are harmless to overall health but they cause tiny bites which can be bothersome.

Although you may see the terms carpet mites and carpet beetles used interchangeably these two pests are actually quite different. Head lice adult lice are difficult to spot but you ll usually see their eggs in your hair. Carpet mites is a term which generally refers to a type of house dust mite which measures about one fourth of a millimeter. Rarely sensitized individuals may develop dermatitis due to the insects crawling over the skin.

Also knowing you have a bug problem can cause you to feel like there are things on you even when there aren t. However most spider bites do not require medical treatment and you can reduce any itch or pain with the same over the counter methods for other bug bites. If you notice bed bug like red spots and discover that you have carpet beetles but not bed bugs then they may be the cause.
